Alliance to Save Energy: Senate Bill will Raise Energy Bills for American Families, Hurt U.S. Businesses

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, DC – Following is a statement by Paula Glover, president of the Alliance to Save Energy on the budget reconciliation bill passed today by the U.S. Senate.

“The Senate-passed reconciliation measure is a painful step backward, even from what the House passed. It takes a basic bipartisan principal--that energy waste is inherently bad-- and instead puts us in a weaker position to address skyrocketing energy demand and costs.

“The bill puts an end to critical tax credits that conserve energy, reduce costs for all Americans and American businesses, ease grid congestion and provide equitable access to reliable energy.

“Last week the alliance organized a bipartisan Capitol Hill Day, in which our members talked with lawmakers about problems with these policies. Ending the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C), the New Energy Efficient Home Credit (45L) and the Energy Efficient Commercial Buildings Deduction (179D) were policies that no one in our meetings defended.

“The Trump administration has pledged to cut energy costs for American households by 50% and these policies can help him get there. Bipartisan and bicameral support for energy efficiency tax incentives has been a longstanding feature of U.S. energy policy. As one example, 25C generates $2.1 billion in tax relief a year and supports 240,000 American jobs.  Every $1 in 25C tax benefit supports $10 in consumer investment in efficient appliances and homes .

“We are still working to educate lawmakers about the negative impacts of these policy measures, but rest assured that if enacted into law, the Alliance to Save Energy will do everything in our power to reverse these ill-conceived decisions before they do too much damage to our economy.”
